Jaguars Hoping To Broaden Fan Base

The hard deadline for Jaguars season-ticket holders to renew is March 2, and Macky Weaver, the team’s senior vice president/sales and marketing, said he hopes to boost the renewal rate from 78 percent in the lockout year to 90 percent this season. Last year, the Jaguars sold around 35,000 non-premium season tickets in the general bowl, Weaver said that unlike last year when the team extended the deadline, fans who don’t renew by early March will be in danger of losing their seats. The season-ticket holders who renew will have the option of grabbing seats of fans who don’t renew, beginning March 7. New president Mark Lamping has said broadening the Jaguars’ regional fan base outside the First Coast is a priority. Weaver said the Jaguars took some steps in that direction the past two years, but he knows developing a more regional following won’t happen overnight. “It’s a process that takes time, but you need to start building,” Weaver said. “We may look back and say this is when the Jaguars started bec oming a regional franchise.”

well, it was just a stupid market to place a team in the first place. the jacksonville msa is a very small metro area. any fans to the north live in georgia, and they were already falcons fans. there's an ocean to east. there's nothing to the west until you get to tallahasee. to the south has some population but a lot of the people were already phins or bucs fans for many years and aren't just going to switch allegiance.

it was a bad choice and there is no way to make it work in that market. the team needs to be moved.
