Steelers Have A "50/50" Chance Of Losing WR Mike Wallace?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that “someone in the league” has the odds of an NFL team trying to sign WR Mike Wallace away from the Pittsburgh Steelers at “50-50.” Schefter notes that the Steelers are roughly $11 million over the salary cap despite making cuts and renegotiating numerous players contracts so far. In the past, the highest tender for a restricted free agent required a team to give up both a first and third-round pick to sign him but the new CBA eliminated the third-round pick requirement. On top of that, the league closed the ”Poison pill” loophole which prevents team’s from offering restricted free agents creative deals that controlling, Pittsburgh in this case, cannot match. The Steelers are very vulnerable in this situation as their limited cap space, paired with the amount of interest in Wallace, could lead to some serious offers from interested team’s despite the fact that they would have to give up a first-rounder to do so.

With the current contracts coming up and the position the Steelers are in, I think it's better than 50/50 that they lose him. Which would probably be the best thing. If they sign him for one year, then in 2013, they'll have to do a deal for Wallace, Brown, Sanders.

It's going to be very difficult to sign Wallace to a deal and then turn around and sign Brown to a similar deal next season.

with their cap situation, i'm surprised it's not higher than 50/50. they have a lot of work to do and may have to let go of a few guys that will raise some eyebrows

The cap situation isn't as big a deal as everyone is making. Of course it comes into play, but they have quite a few contracts that they could go to to free up some major cash as well as a few players that will be coming off the books. You know these teams can manipulate the cap in a lot of ways to make things work.

Roethlisberger, Harrison, Polamalu, Miller could all be reworked. Ward will be reworked or cut. Hampton is $8M on the cap right now. Farrior is $4M. Smith is $3M. Mendenhall could also be released as well.

The thing the Steelers have to be most careful about is if they pay Wallace $x million a year, they'll most likely have to pay Brown more than that and Brown is arguably the better all around receiver and there's a chance that they in turn lose him. Not to mention Sanders will have to have a new deal done as well.

That'd be interesting to see if Alex Smith could throw a deep ball

I think he'd be sick in Tampa and they have the cash to sign him. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Bucs were eventual players for Wallace.

I don't see them giving this year's first though, that's pretty high

True...but they are so far under the cap that they could pretty much "buy the talent" that they would need to cover for a first round pick...if that makes sense.

I know they've said it's the plan, but I'll believe that shift in the Glazer paradigm when I see it.
