| John Elway Says Broncos Will Spend More In 2012 | | | Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway says the team will spend more in 2012 than they spent in 2011, Mike Klis of The Denver Post reports. "Cash-wise we'll spend more than cap this year," said John Elway, the Broncos' head of football operations. "But that's where it comes down to how everybody accounts and how the numbers get skewed. Whether you're over the cap or under the cap it just comes down to the accounting." Klis does a good job of explaining "cash versus cap", and notes that in terms of actual cash (signing bonuses, option bonuses, etc...) the Broncos spent a few million under their $120.375 million salary cap in 2011. With a roll over amount in excess of $20 million, the Broncos are expected to have a salary cap number north of $140 million in 2012. According to my records, the Broncos have around $85 million in cash committed to 2012, so based on Elway's comments today, the Broncos appear poised to be heavy spenders when free agency opens on March 13.
