Raiders Dump Starting CB Stanford Routt One Year Into His 5-Year, $54M Deal

Less than one year ago, Al Davis made Stanford Routt one of the cornerstones of the Oakland Raiders defense with a lavish contract that prevented him from reaching free agency. Now, Routt is the first player casualty under the new regime with the Raiders. Routt was released on Thursday just one year into a five-year, $54.5 million contract, ending his seven-year tenure in Oakland as the team heads in a new direction. The move by new general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen signifies a change of approach from when Davis ran the team and was fiercely loyal to players he drafted. After the news conference announcing Allen's hiring on Jan. 30, McKenzie said the Raiders had some contracts that were "out of whack."

Hopefully it was front loaded, then it wouldn't be that bad.

Well, I certainly hope he'll want to resign with Oakland a totally different contract. Our secondary is just going to be awful this upcoming season.

yep, the raiders definitely have some strange contracts that will need to be dealt with ........... i'm not sure this was all about money though ............. did the raiders even offer to restructure and keep him? maybe routt didn't want that option?

I read somewhere that last season he allowed 8 TDs and committed 17 penalties. Whoever picks him up, be careful. He sounds like Terrence Newman 2.0 to me.
