San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick says he expects to be part of an "open and fair" competition to winning the starting QB job in 2012 according to Dan Hinxman of the Reno Gazette-Journal. The lockout hampered Kaepernick's development during his rookie year after being drafted by the 49ers out of Nevada. The question is whether he will be competing with Alex Smith, who is a free agent this offseason. Jim Harbaugh has made it known that he wants Smith to be re-signed.
