| San Francisco Couldn’t Compete With 49ers’ Santa Clara Deal | | | The National Football League’s $200 million contribution all but ensures that the 49ers will go forward with their plan for a new stadium in Santa Clara. Barring a major setback – such as construction delays, or a legal ruling against changes from the deal Santa Clara voters approved in June 2010 – the 49ers will be heading 40 miles south by the 2015 season. In terms of government assistance, the 49ers are getting a deal they could not have dreamed of attaining in San Francisco. Santa Clara’s City Council has agreed to provide an $850 million loan for the stadium. A group of Santa Clara stadium opponents has demanded a referendum on this change in scope of the city commitment, but the council has refused, and its attorneys maintain that it is consistent with the intent of the voter-approved Measure J.
