Andy Reid Says He Offered Steve Spagnuolo Job On Eagles' Defensive Staff

Eagles coach Andy Reid said he offered Steve Spagnuolo a coaching position before the former St. Louis Rams coach chose to be the defensive coordinator in New Orleans. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday for the first time since the regular-season finale on Jan. 1, Reid said he didn't specify a job title in his conversations with Spagnuolo, who was fired after going 10-38 in three seasons with the Rams. Spagnuolo previously worked under defensive coordinator Jim Johnson in Philadelphia, and was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants when they beat New England in Super Bowl XLII. He joined the Saints two weeks ago after defensive coordinator Gregg Williams left for the same position with the Rams. Reid also said he planned to retain defensive coordinator Juan Castillo all along. Castillo was heavily criticized in his first season at a new position after coaching the offensive line for 13 years.

i call bullshit that he offered a spot under castillo. he offered spags the dc spot itself but spags turned it down. partly because of jim washburn plus there's little stability with reid hanging by a thread.

well, that could be true because the article just said Reid planned all along to 'retain' Castillo .............. maybe he was planning on demoting castillo to be under Spags.

Reid didnt think Mudd would be returning this season for his 143rd season in the NFL. And from crap I heard he offered Spags an Asst DC/db coach type gig. Plus Spags doesnt like the wide 9.
