On Monday, they signed one of their former practice-squad receivers, John Matthews, to a reserve/future contract. Matthews, who played under coach Jim Harbaugh at USD, joined the 49ers’ practice squad on Oct. 4 and stuck there the rest of the season except for two weeks in late November. When the 49ers released Braylon Edwards before the regular-season finale, Joe Hastings was promoted from the practice squad rather than Matthews (6-foot, 200 pounds). Source: MercuryNews
