Lions RB Kevin Smith Unsure Of His Future In Detroit

As the Lions headed into the off-season, free-agent running back Kevin Smith was not sure about where his path would lead. Smith made a valuable contribution this season. He had a career-high 4.9-yard rushing average and had three solid games, including a 140-yard day against Carolina, after signing off the street in the middle of the season. But Smith struggled with a high-ankle sprain and saw his production wane in the final few games. That, plus four running backs still under contract with the Lions -- Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure, Keiland Williams and Joique Bell -- makes his situation sticky in Detroit. "I'll let my agent handle that," Smith said. "I would love to be here. This is all I know, so I would love to be here. But I understand this is a business, and they're doing whatever they need to make this better. If I'm a part of that, that'll be great. If not, my career will keep moving forward."

well, the dude can't stay on the field ............ i'm sure if the lions keep him, he's not going to get paid much because they have to assume he'll only play half of a season

his situation is very similar to what stafford was going through................ when smith is on the field, he looks pretty good .......... they just can't depend on him to stay healthy.

if i were smith, i would probably beg the Lions to sign me to a 1-year, incentive-laden contract so that if i could stay healthy all year and put up some numbers, i could not only make some decent money in 2012, but would then position myself for a decent free agent contract.

Well lets put it this way...aside from Best the only good RB we had was Smith. Morrice Morris is old, and he didn't look like the same player as the years past. Honestly? Bell and Williams are camp bodies, and Williams did NOTHING this season to make me believe he belongs in this league. I could very well see Smith as our 3rd RB on the depth chart behind Best/LeShoure. Best has proven he is one tackle away from a concussion, so Smith would probably get some carries.

He can't stay healthy, he had that one monster game and then BOOM same old Kevin Smith, he's very inconsistent and often times is too soft. Guy gets hits and is down, no beast mode. He is an excellent blocker, and can pick up a blitz and catch out of the backfield but you can't depend on him to be around for the whole season, or to count on him to be a workhorse.
