Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award, according to Mlive.com. The award, voted on by the Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers Association, will be officially announced on February 4. Stafford, 23, threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns (97.2 QB Rating) this past season. He played in just 13 games total in his first two seasons, finishing each season on the injured reserve. This season, however, he started all 16 games.

Stafford beasted, this year. If he can keep playing like this, the Lions will be perennial playoff contenders

He's only 23, that's just scary. Injuries are the only things that can derail him at this point. Good to see he held up all year, hopefully the injury bug is a thing of the past. Now, can he pass some of his secrets along to Kevin Smith?

yes, stafford is scary good and scary young. i'm just not sure his season should be defined as a 'comeback' year .............. if we're giving an award for a 'breakout' season, then stafford would be my winner with guys like Alex Smith in the conversation.

To me, a 'comeback' player should be someone who had defined himself as a great player in this league for some period of time prior to his injury/slump and subsequent 'comeback'. Stafford hadn't been on the field enough his first 2 years to really say what he was.

I would say Elvis Dumervil or DQwell Jackson or Reggie Bush or Steve Smith are 'comeback' candidates but I don't see guys like Stafford or Alex Smith (who was getting some hype for this award) even qualify for it.

Honestly...I'm kinda surprised he won it, yeah he got hurt but the spark was there. Now Smith? Yeah Alex Smith should of won for sure. The guy had been a bum for what like 7 years?

Smith has always sucked. There's nothing to come "back" from. Stafford has been hurt so really the same deal there.

yes, alex smith (and i believe stafford) both had breakout years, not comeback years, because they weren't 'coming back' to greatness............ both of them just discovered greatness for the first time this year.............. the comeback probably should have been reggie bush or dqwell
