LaDainian Tomlinson Feels Jets Should Bring In Competition For QB Mark Sanchez

LaDainian Tomlinson, who has served as a well-respected voice of reason during the Jets' recent turmoil, vouched for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's work ethic on ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" today. But the veteran running back also believes Sanchez could benefit from competition at the position. "There’s a lot of things you can say about Mark Sanchez, but to call him lazy is a bit much," Tomlinson said. "This is a guy that has worked very hard off the field, in the film room. I’ve seen it -- in the weight room, putting in extra time with the coaches early in the morning, after practice when everybody is gone. He’s putting in time, so he’s not lazy." Last week, a New York Daily News article anonymously quoted an unnamed number of Jets players who were critical of Sanchez, calling him "lazy" or "coddled" or advocating the team bring in Colts star Peyton Manning. The Jets have said Sanchez will be their starter in 2012, but general manager Mike Tannenbaum said they will evaluate the quarterback position as a whole, indicating they may bring in a back-up to push Sanchez. Tomlinson thinks that is a good idea. "With all of us as athletes, we play our best football -- or whatever sport you may be playing -- when you're pushed," Tomlinson said. "Competition brings that out of us, and for Mark, he hasn’t had that competition to push him. I do think that he would be a better player if he had some competition, somebody to push him."

Funny thing is if he were in KC, the media or players wouldn't even care. Cassel is no better than Sanchez.
