Lions GM Martin Mayhew Says Team Doesn't Need Defensive Overhaul

General manager Martin Mayhew acknowledged that the defense crumbled a bit down the stretch but said Thursday that he didn't think an overhaul was in order. "I like our defense," he said. "We didn't finish the season the way we would have liked, but our defense did a lot of good things this year. We made a ton of plays. We would like to shore some things up as far as stopping the run." The Lions gave up 45 points in each of the last two games — to the Packers and Saints. They gave up an average of 31 points over the last eight games, including the playoffs. "Obviously, we didn't finish off well, but I think injuries were a factor in that," Mayhew said. "By no means do I think we need an overhaul on defense. We have a lot of good defensive players and a good defensive coaching staff. We need to healthy-up a little bit." Specifically, Mayhew tied the decline of the defense to safety Louis Delmas' knee injury on Thanksgiving Day. Mayhew was asked if he was worried about Delmas' ability to stay on the field moving forward? "You worry about everybody's durability; but no, he's a young guy and he's not getting shoulder or neck injuries," Mayhew said. "He had a groin in 2010 and a knee injury this year. He's a good player and he makes a difference."

Delmas is alright, but he tackles awful. Guys too much these days try to just run fast and hit someone instead of tackling, and he is one of those main offenders of just running and hitting someone and then that guys bounces him off them and runs for a big gain.
