NFL Admits Two Mistakes On Brees Sack-Fumble In Lions-Saints Game

The NFL has confirmed what Lions head coach Jim Schwartz beefed about after the 45-28 playoff loss to the Saints Saturday — the officials blew a call that cost them a touchdown. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the league office confirmed that two mistakes were made on the sack-fumble of quarterback Drew Brees by Lions defensive end Willie Young that linebacker Justin Durant scooped up and ran toward the end zone when the whistle blew. The touchdown would have put the Lions up 20-7 with 5:39 left in the first half. The league agreed the whistle was inadvertent. The second mistake was a result of the first one as Referee Tony Corrente, who ruled that Brees had fumbled, incorrectly gave the ball to the Lions after the play was blown dead as rules state the Saints should have retained possession because of the inadvertent whistle. "Because the ruling on the field was a fumble, and the whistle came before the recovery, the play is dead because of the inadvertent whistle and the Saints should have retained possession of the ball," the league statement said. "New Orleans would then have had the choice to put the ball in play at the spot where possession was lost or to replay the down. Inadvertent whistles are not reviewable."

Well it's not like any of the fans/commentators/players didn't notice this... or call it out on twitter/during the game. Those ref's seem to get worse and worse every year.

As the 3rd down at the beginning of the 2nd half, when the refs spotted the ball in the Saints favour. The drive lead to a TD....
