Redskins QB Rex Grossman Says He Can Cut Down On His Interceptions

Redskins quarterback and free-agent-to-be Rex Grossman said Monday morning that he doesn’t know what his future holds, but he is confident that he can cure his ever-present interception bug. Grossman completed 57.9 percent of his passes this season for 3,151 yards and 16 touchdowns but he also threw 20 interceptions and lost five fumbles in 13 games. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has said that for Grossman to succeed in the future, he needs to cut down on his turnovers. When asked if he thought that was possible, Grossman answered confidently. “Definitely,” he said. He said he views interceptions in two categories: those that are his fault and avoidable, and those that are not his fault and can’t be avoided. “There’s times when interceptions are acceptable in a situation where it wasn’t your fault or something happened that you weren’t expecting, or tipped ball or things like that that happen to you that are just completely not your fault. Those are acceptable,” Grossman said. “Those are things you can’t control and as a coaching staff, as you evaluate the whole season, they’ll definitely take those into account, and you can’t prevent those as a quarterback."

Rex is always going to throw more INTs than some QBs because he's a gunslinger, but some QBs also get better with age and experience. I think one thing people forget is that Rex has only had two full starting seasons -- this season being one of them. His only other full season was QB-ing the Bears to the Superbowl.

I'm not saying that he will improve and throw less INTs, but when he's 'Good Rex', he's pretty good and if he can be more consistantly 'Good Rex', he may be able to cut down on picks and make more positive plays.

Thats fine.

However, you as a Cowboys fan probably watched both Redskins/Cowboys games and should have saw that Rex had done enough to beat you both times. In the first game, Romo pulled a miracle pass out of his a** at the end of the Sunday Night game to keep their final drive alive that lead to the go-ahead score. In Washington, if the Skins kicker doesn't choke yet again, Rex might have had the win in OT.

My case is that Rex has flaws, but he wasn't exactly surrounded by a lot of offensive talent in Washington and I stand by it.

As for my Romo bashing, it's only about his choking in the clutch. I did say that the guy is a good QB who could be great if he found a way to win big games.

Rex is what he is. Good Rex comes out when teams cant expoit his weakness, the biggest one being his inability to step into the pocket and make a throw. If he has pressure in the middle, he is a wreck. Its a mental thing, and he is a guy Ron Rivera once called a "mental midget". He is the type of QB that if he was surrounded by a team that was loaded on both sides of the ball, he can play at a respectable level

Exactly, Joe

Throw in his height/lack of mobility/penchant for throwing off his back foot to avoid pressure & you have way too much risk & never enough reward. He never learns from his mistakes. Personally, him getting hurt the first couple times early in his career has increased his fear of stepping up in the pocket & following thru on his throws.

Nothing to do with how many games started/how much talent/etc., just the inability to adjust & keep his team in a game.
