| Jaguars Coach Jack Del Rio Speaks About QB's David Garrard, Trent Edwards | | |
Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio spoke on SIRIUS NFL Radio's Movin' the Chains on Tuesday. Hosts Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan asked him about Trent Edwards and David Garrard. The most interesting quote about Garrard is at the very end. "So we expect him to bounce back," Del Rio said. "We need him to bounce back. Obviously, we can't function as a football team if we're playing that poorly in particular with our passing game." Here's what he said about Edwards: "We think it gives us an opportunity to add a guy at an important position. We lost a backup. After the San Diego game we lost Luke McCown and we have a younger guy who we think gives us an opportunity to add depth at that position. Todd Bouman is a guy who knows our system and he's here as our backup right now but to have a guy who has a chance to go forward beyond just next week and the rest of this season, but beyond that as a prospect, it's a little bit like adding a draft pick and so we're excited to have him aboard." Kirwan: "How long would a guy like that take, I don't know if the system he was in crossed over with your system, the language. If all those things are in place they can move in a little faster into the neighborhood. If it's not there's always that language issue until they get on the same page. How long do you think it'll take?" Del Rio: "It'll take a little time. I think we anticipate that. We'll find out how much carryover there is. Typically there is some but we're counting on there being a little bit of a learning curve. He is a smart kid, he did go to Stanford so we're thinking the learning curve maybe can be accelerated. But we'll do our best to get him caught up as quickly as possible." And about Garrard: Ryan: "What do you see when you watch David Garrard on tape?" Del Rio: "Two weeks ago in San Diego we underthrew a ball, got a ball tipped, had one he'd certainly want to have back and ended up with an ugly day. But a lot of it can be kind of explained away. This past week offensively we just couldn't generate anything in our passing game. Hand-in-hand, I mean, it's never just one person or one thing. There were issues where we got beat up front and then there were issues where he wasn't directing the ball and getting it out and making decisions. And that's the part where it kind of paralyzed our offense. So we expect him to bounce back. We need him to bounce back. Obviously, we can't function as a football team if we're playing that poorly in particular with our passing game."
