After months of organized team activities, minicamps, training camp, four preseason games and two games to begin the regular season, the Redskins suddenly realized Larry Johnson does not play special teams? And now they cannot afford the luxury of two backs who don't? Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, said a Redskins official told him that Tuesday's decision to release the two-time Pro Bowler was necessitated by the team's need to sign another player for special teams. Supposedly, several players who participate on special teams are injured, and the Redskins eventually might reveal that information. Two sources familiar with the situation said Tuesday that Washington had signed Chad Simpson, a third-year pro who spent 2008-09 with Indianapolis, where he returned 53 kickoffs.
