Rookie WR David Nelson A Pleasant Surprise For The Bills

WR David Nelson didn't produce much in college, catching only 46 passes playing behind future pros Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy and Riley Cooper at the University of Florida, but Nelson may have found a spot in the pros. Bills observers think the undrafted rookie has a chance to start this season after he beat out underachieving 2008 second-round pick James Hardy for a roster spot. Nelson has good hands and a big body (6-5, 217), which could eventually benefit QB Trent Edwards and fellow WR Lee Evans. If Nelson can find open seams in the middle of the field, fewer teams will blitz Edwards, and opponents will be more reluctant to double-team Evans. Nelson missed some time in camp because of an Achilles tendon injury, but he is a serviceable blocker, which is beneficial in Buffalo's run-first attack but still, the prospect of Nelson winning a starting job may say more about the Bills' lack of talent at the WR spot than about his ability.
