Ex-Seahawks OL Coach Alex Gibbs Resigned Because Of Burnout

Because he continued to go out of his way to avoid the media, it's hard to determine what actually triggered offensive line coach Alex Gibbs' decision to retire only eight days before Seattle's season opener. One team insider told Pro Football Weekly the 69-year-old Gibbs told him shortly before Gibbs' retirement was disclosed that he was indeed feeling "gassed." It's not hard to see how the Seahawks' persistent injury problems on the offensive line might have totally worn out Gibbs - particularly OLT Russell Okung's high ankle sprain that most observers believe will probably keep the first-rounder sidelined until the Week Three game against the Chargers. But PFW hears the team is confident that the combination of new O-line coach - and longtime Pete Carroll crony - Pat Ruel and holdover assistants Art Valero and Luke Butkus can keep Gibbs' zone-blocking scheme intact without missing too much of a beat.
