| 49ers QB Alex Smith Among Players Named Team Captains | | |
The last time a 49ers quarterback was placed in an official team leadership role was 2007 when veteran Trent Dilfer was named one of then-coach Mike Nolan's "shop captains." Alex Smith entered that season as the starting quarterback, but the top reserve was considered a better leader. Smith begins his sixth NFL season on Sunday, and he has finally been elevated to locker room nobility. "To get the acknowledgment you're a captain -- I've kind of been doing it the whole preseason, but to get officially named -- is nice," Smith said. Coach Mike Singletary on Wednesday informed Smith he would be one of the team's six captains for the duration of the season. Smith is the newcomer to the group that also includes tight end Vernon Davis, center Eric Heitmann, defensive end Justin Smith, and linebackers Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes.
