| Downtown San Diego Stadium Is Chargers Last Option | | | If the Chargers efforts to get a downtown San Diego stadium built fail, this is it. “You don’t want to say this is it,” says Mark Fabiani, the Chargers’ point man on the new stadium search. “I defy anybody to look at this process and identify a threat by us. But, the reality is, after eight years and $10 million spent cycling through site after site, we’re not left with a lot of alternatives. There is no magic 100-acre site anybody’s heard about.” For once the franchise seems to have the support of a mayor, Jerry Sanders — and perhaps some constituents, with enough vision to see through the bureaucratic fog. “The truth is, we’re getting down to the final options — and this may be the last option,” Fabiani says. “We may go back and look at Escondido if this doesn’t work, but I don’t see a dramatic, 11th-hour site that will solve everybody’s problem. “I get it all the time, ‘Why don’t you just tell people you’re going to leave unless it gets done?’ You can’t deal with people that way. You can’t break the bond with the fans and the public. Threats may have worked in other cities, but that just isn’t Dean’s style.” Fabiani is speaking of club President Dean Spanos, who has been patient during this process as he’s watched stadiums go up in other NFL cities.
