San Diego State football players wore black game jerseys. Former Chargers who were in attendance included Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Rolf Benirschke, Russ Washington, Ed White, Jim Laslavic and Hank Bauer. The service titled “A Celebration of Life,” was emceed by former Chargers defensive back Miles McPherson, now a pastor at The Rock church in Point Loma. According to Don Norcross of the San Diego Union-Tribune, after rattling off a long list of halls of fame that have enshrined Coryell, McPherson lowered his voice and muttered, “The NFL needs to put him in the Hall of Fame.” “I learned everything from him,” said former Raiders coach and iconic TV broadcaster John Madden. “How to be a head coach. It’s ironic that there are three speakers here today (Madden, Fouts and Winslow) who are in the (Pro Football) Hall of Fame and not Don Coryell.” “It’s ridiculous,” said Winslow. “You can’t watch a football game today without some formation, some variation of what we did with Coryell,” Winslow said. “That’s where the West Coast offense came from. That’s where The Hogs came from. It’s where the (Greatest Show on Turf) came from when the Rams won. It’s the same thing. Source: The Red Zone | | |
