Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal reports Federal authorities have notified the NFLPA that the union "may have been the victim of violations of federal laws," according to a memo sent out to all NFLPA employees today. The memo is related to a continuing investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor into whether meetings between some NFLPA player leaders and NFL officials more than a year ago violated the federal labor laws and undermined the position of the union as a whole, sources said and the Department of Labor's division of labor fraud and racketeering has been investigating the union since at least the spring of 2009. The memo, sent out today to all employees of the NFLPA and its licensing arm, NFL Players, by associate general counsel Heather McPhee, stated that "government authorities" had notified the NFLPA that it may be the victim of violation of federal laws and that the NFLPA has continued to cooperate with the federal investigation. "As part of the Government's investigation, employees of the NFLPA may be contacted by federal authorities seeking information," states the memo, which was obtained by SportsBusiness Journal. "If you are contacted, you may choose to speak to federal authorities and/or you may request that an attorney be present for this interview. If you choose to have an attorney present, the NFLPA will designate outside counsel pursuant to its policies; that lawyer can advise you of your rights and represent you individually for this purpose at no cost to you." The NFLPA declined comment.
