Under the NFL slotting principle, it's believed that McCoy received signing bonus of roughly $105,000. McCoy was projected as a second-round draft pick, but his stock dipped following a FOX Sports report that he allegedly tested positive for marijuana at the NFL scouting combine. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who coached McCoy at USC, described him as the team's top value pick. "My head's hurting," McCoy said after the draft. "I'm over here shedding tears. I'm just real happy that if it's anywhere I've got to go, it's to be with coach Carroll again. ..Really, I just made a mistake, and I regret doing it. Right now, I've moved past that. I'm just focused on helping the Seattle Seahawks organization, help them win football games." McCoy is regarded as an all-around tight end in terms of blocking skills and pass-catching ability.
