Charley Casserly Believes Redskins Could Release QB Jason Campbell

When coach Mike Shanahan was asked what would happen if quarterback Jason Campbell can't be traded, he gave a simple answer: Campbell would return to the Redskins and "work 110 percent." Charley Casserly painted a more complex scenario when he discussed the issue on the Mike Wise Show last week, saying he thinks it's possible the Skins could release Campbell. "I don't think they're gonna pay him $3 Million, and I don't think he's gonna be there, so yeah, I think you could see him released," Casserly said. "They may hold onto him up till training camp, because if he doesn't get hurt, they're not on [the hook] for the contract. Now I think the thing is, Campbell, once he signs the tender - and he may not choose to do this - they can't keep him out of camp. Tennessee tried to do that with McNair, and lost the case. So if Jason wanted to force the issue he could come into camp, make it an uncomfortable situation. Now, that's not Jason Campbell's personality to do something like that, but his agent may tell him to do that to force the release. It's something you have to be aware of if you're running the Redskins, and it's a strategy that Campbell has to think about, too. But I think what'll happen right now is you go through the draft, see if something happens, go to the beginning of May and see if anything happens with a trade. You know, It's possible a team doesn't get a quarterback may give the Redskins a late pick for next year for him. I think they may have to wait till after the draft, because teams looking for a quarterback may go in there and try to see what they can get in the draft. You know, there was no market for him a year ago, so I'm not sure there's gonna be much if any market for the guy, to be honest with you."

There's not going to be one for him, simply because teams have scrambled to fill up with what they can. Before the Quinn trade, he would have been nice for Denver, and before the Anderson signing, Arizona could've been a destination. Only places I can see maybe taking a look at him are SF, SEA, and Buffalo and I'm not even sure about two of those. If Favre retired, then Minnesota would be a good destination/

I still think we might be able to eek a 5th or 6th out of the Raiders but I don;t think they'll release him because having signed his tender that contract is guaranteed so it's $3m down the drain. Best to keep hold of him and wait until pre-season for a QB to go down then get a future pick.
