Colts Likely Will Miss DE Raheem Brock

The Colts have gone out of their way to stay under the radar so far this offseason, and one move that hardly received any mention on the national scene was the decision to terminate the contract of versatile veteran DL Raheem Brock, and according to team insiders, it's a move the Colts really would have preferred not to make. "It's my understanding that he went to the team and asked to be let go," one source close to the scene said of Brock, who played in all 16 games as an invaluable swing man for the sixth time in eight seasons in Indianapolis. "I think he got really tired of being asked to move back and forth between end and tackle and really wanted a shot at being a starting end, but that obviously wasn't going to happen here with (Pro Bowlers) Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis locked in as the starters. While Raheem has got good quickness, he's just not the same kind of quick-twitch guy off the corner as Dwight and Robert." That said, there's no denying Brock's ability to shift around from left end to left tackle on first and second down and operate as a stand-up linebacker in passing situations could be sorely missed. "He was very important," the source said. "(Head coach Jim) Caldwell would talk all the time about Raheem always seeming to make some kind of big play in every win." Players currently on the roster who possibly could step into the same kind of role that Brock so adequately filled include 2009 second-round draft pick Fili Moala, who played both outside and inside at USC, and fourth-year pro Keyunta Dawson. "But it wouldn't be a surprise at all if they decided to spend a pretty high pick on a good-looking hybrid in the draft," the source said.
