Giants, Jets Will Make Their Pitch To Host Super Bowl XLVIII

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and New York Giants co-owner John Mara will make their pitch to their colleagues in hopes of convincing them to approve the first Super Bowl for an open-air stadium in a cold-weather locale. Meadowlands Stadium is one of three stadiums that are up for bid to host Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 along with Sun Life Stadium in Miami and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The NFL has requirements that a Super Bowl hosting stadium have a 50 degree climate or be held in an indoor climate-controlled facility but Meadowlands Stadium was given preliminary approval because of a "unique, once-only circumstance based on the opportunity to celebrate the new stadium and the great heritage and history of the NFL in the New York region."

I don't think it's a rule as much as it is for the fans going to the game because winter in colder cities are much more unpredictable, so that way the game won't have to be delayed or postponed due to a blizzard.
