Jets Owner Woody Johnson Backs Off Coin Toss Comments

Woody Johnson, the Jets’ owner, tried to move on from the controversy he stoked this week by saying Wednesday that he never meant to question Commissioner Roger Goodell’s integrity when he criticized the secret coin flip that determined that the Giants would host the first game in the teams’ new stadium. In his first public comments since he fired a salvo at Goodell on Monday night, Johnson said in a telephone interview that he trusted Goodell, despite the way the coin flip was handled. “He and I just disagree, and we have disagreed in the past and probably in the future as well,” Johnson said. “I never directed anything towards Roger. Just the process we were talking about, not Roger.” Johnson also said he did not think his comments would adversely affect the joint Jets-Giants bid to host the Super Bowl in 2014, saying it “is a bid that stands on its own merits.” “It’s for two teams, in an important media market,” Johnson said. “Hopefully the owners will agree on the merits that it is something worth doing. I don’t think one has anything to do with the other.”
