49ers Won't Overspend And Go For A Quick Fix In Free Agency

The San Francisco 49ers made their move in free agency in recent seasons with the big-money additions of cornerback Nate Clements and defensive lineman Justin Smith but the organization does not feel the pressure to go for the "quick fix" as the free-agent signing period is set to open. General manager Scot McCloughan said the prospects of no salary cap in the NFL will have no impact on the 49ers' plans, as they figure to place their emphasis on improving through the draft. "For us it doesn't change a thing," McCloughan said. "We're not going to be considered a big free-agency team. We're going to do what we need to do in free agency if it's going to make us better, but it's not going to change our spending one way or the other. We have a good plan in place. It's a philosophy we've had in the past. We're not going to adjust. If we get to the point where we have to, we'll consider it." The 49ers are not expected to be interested in any potential high-priced free agents, such as Julius Peppers, Dunta Robinson or Karlos Dansby. After all, the 49ers want to budget their money to be able to lock up the likes of Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis and Dashon Goldson to long-term contracts.
