Jets LB Vernon Gholston Facing A Make-Or-Break Year

Jets coach Rex Ryan threw down the gauntlet regarding lackluster linebacker Vernon Gholston, saying it’s time for him to start hitting the quarterback or hit the road. ‘‘I think that is an accurate statement,’’ said Ryan Saturday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis when asked if 2010 is a make-or-break season for Gholston. ‘‘Generally by the third year, you got to see a guy really making strides and I expect Vernon to really make strides this year.’’ Gholston, who was selected sixth overall in 2008 and landed a contract that guaranteed him $21 million, has yet to notch a sack in 29 career games.
