Bears President Says Team Won't Go On A Free Agent Spending Spree

Bears president Ted Phillips said the Bears will not go on a spending spree during free agency this offseason. "We're not going to be one of those handful of teams sometimes that just goes hog wild in free agency. I think you guys know our strategy has always been kind of balanced in free agency and work through the draft and every other area to try to add players to the team. It's not all about free agency. I think the reality that teams' success, at least in the NFL, is not based on how much money you spend in free agency," Phillips said. Asked if that means you can rule the Bears out of the Julius Peppers' Sweepstakes, Phillips balked. Some believe with general manager Jerry Angelo, coach Lovie Smith and maybe even Phillips facing a win-or-else mandate, the Bears will open up the purse strings in an effort to fill some needs and produce the first playoff team since 2006. "We can't talk about individual players," Phillips said. "I can tell you we are in the midst of putting the finishing touches on what our plan is. We'll go from there. Come March 5, we'll see what situation we pursue and not."

That would kinda make the Bears SPEND MONEY, something they won't do.

I was about to say....they might as well just come out and say the truth. "Frankly we are too tight to open up our wallets. Don't you all know that's why we are keeping a lame-duck coach employed?"
