Raiders To Hire Clancy Pendergast As DB Coach

NFL insider John Clayton tells ESPN writer Bill Williamson that Oakland has hired former Kansas City defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast to coach the defensive backs. Pendergast was replaced by Romeo Crennel as the Chiefs defensive coordinator last month. Initially, Kansas City coach Todd Haley said he was interested in keeping Pendergast on the staff but last week, the team and Pendergast parted ways.

Maybe he can do something with actual talent in the Raiders secondary and not have to worry about the entire defense.

Does this mean Cable is safe? Wouldn't a new head coach get to name his own people, so hiring lower level coaches now be pointless otherwise?

...

Oh wait, it's Al Davis running the ship...

I doubt Cable has any input on who gets hired under him at all. Hue Jackson was just an attempt by Al to salvage Russell, who Cable hates so you know he wasn't on board for that one. Pendergast is another typical Al coach...basically someone accepting a demotion just in order to keep the checks coming and keep food on the table.
