The 49ers will not be playing catch-up to that degree this offseason, as Alex Smith is expected to open the season as the starter with returning wideouts Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan. Also, Jimmy Raye, the seventh offensive coordinator in seven years, is expected to be back for a second season running the offense. "It will be new for me," Smith said. "A lot of it will be self-reflection and self-analysis, looking back at this last year and analyzing the things we did and where we can go from there to get to the next step. How do we get better? How do we take it to the next level? This offseason will be big because we won't be installing from square one. It is really, how do we push ourselves to take that step and not just go through the motions of an offseason. We really need to have a sense of urgency and take advantage of the time."
