New England coach Bill Belichick expressed sincere admiration for Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers (and a number of his teammates), but he dismissed talk that his team was looking to acquire the Panthers franchise player this offseason. The Patriots were one of the mythical four teams to which Peppers' side said he'd agree to be traded, back in the days when he said he didn't want to return to Charlotte. The guaranteed $16.7 million for the season eventually changed his mind, but the questions aren't far away as he's within a month of wrapping up his contractual obligations. "I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about," Belichick said Wednesday of the speculation that centered on his team. "We didn't talk to Julius, and we couldn't talk to Carolina because he wasn't signed. I'm not really sure what you're referring to."
