Former Buccanners coach Jon Gruden was convinced Brett Favre was coming to Tampa Bay last summer. It was early August, and Bucs General Manager Bruce Allen was working out a trade with Ted Thompson and the Packers for Favre. “I talked to Brett on the telephone … both of us thought he was coming to Tampa,” said Gruden during a national conference call Wednesday. “I went to bed thinking we had Brett Favre. I was sure we had Brett Favre. And when I woke up the next day, Santa Claus didn’t arrive. It was a sad day for me.” The Packers instead traded Favre to the Jets. The Buccaneers finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs, and Gruden was subsequently fired.
