Panthers GM Marty Hurney on Thursday unequivocally reiterated his faith in QB Jake Delhomme and defended the long-term contract he gave the veteran in April. Hurney, in a interview with a Charlotte radio station, said Delhomme and the Panthers will survive their current downturn and blamed the quarterback's dismal recent output (11 turnovers in his last two games) on a lack of confidence. Said Hurney: "I think confidence becomes the issue. I think whether it's with an individual or a football team, is the confidence level you play at. I don't want to think about that (him failing). I know Jake Delhomme is a good quarterback in this league and that he has proven he can win games for us and will continue to win games for us."
