Payton indicated in the final days of his teams organized team activities that a training camp competition is looming between incumbent backup Mark Brunell and Joey Harrington, the third-stringer most of last season, to be Brees understudy. Those two are going to compete for that position, much like most of these jobs, Payton said in acknowledging that Harrington, a former first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, has a chance to unseat Brunell. I feel good because we have experience there, Payton said. We have a relatively young player in Harrington and I do think well have competition at that (No. 2) spot. With just three on the roster now, that will afford us an opportunity to give those guys plenty of reps in training camp, especially in the preseason games.
