Free Agent QB Kelly Holcomb Turned Down Steelers Offer In 2008
Filed Under: , , ,

Five different NFL teams contacted Holcomb early last season about a potential return, including the Pittsburgh Steelers after Charlie Batch the backup to starter Ben Roethlisberger went down to injury. That was intriguing to Holcomb because of a distinct comfort level with Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. After all, Holcomb befriended and had a solid professional relationship with Arians when he was the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns at the same time Holcomb quarterbacked there during the early part of this decade. After I turned down the Pittsburgh Steelers, everybody finally got the notion that I was not going to play any more, Holcomb says.

im gonna call you an ass again.

they all practice, they all take reps to make everyone learn the stuff...leftwich worked alot during practice last year and played a huge part in 2 games, ok not a huge part in the browns game but he kicked ass in washington.

alot of players want to go to championship caliber teams late in their career when they are ringless. if you played for 20 years and felt you could still contribute on a team would you go to the steelers or the lions as a backup? how about the patriots or the raiders?

Its still not the only reason to go to a team. Thinking oh im going to come to this team to try to ride the bench and win a ring. Backup Qbs are important but i was replying to the original post that he could have won a ring.

all the article is trying to say is that he was committed to retiring despite the offer from a team like the steelers. alot of players are drawn out of retirement right away by things like an offer like the steelers made holcomb. favre, seau, ect

No...you go to a team knowing you'll be a backup QB. Hence, you'd want to go be a backup on a team that has a chance to wint he Super Bowl...would you not? Do you think A.J. Feeley would rather be the third string guy on the Lions or the Eagles?

You might hope along the way you get a chance to play and contribute, but it's not always going to happen...
