Star Tribune reporter Paul Allen asked Vikings general manager Rick Spielman about contract negotiations with veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield. Talks between the two sides broke off recently. Winfield, who is entering the final season on his current deal, did not participate in any OTAs and also missed the mandatory minicamp to attend the funeral of a friends mother. Antoine is a great football player for us and I know hes one of the key parts of our defense, Spielman said. Just from the business perspective its an ongoing process. Its an ongoing negotiation. Its all part of the business. Were going to do everything that we can because Antoine is such an important part of our defense, an important part of our team. I know Coach Childress identifies the guys who are core guys and well try to keep them all together as long as we can. Weve been able to do that and hopefully well have the same success with Antoine.
