Joe Paterno Tells Recruit He'll Coach For Another 4-5 Years At this point, it's safe to assume that there won’t ever be another head coach at Penn State. Ever. Joe Paterno, the soon-to-be 84-year-old leader of the Nittany Lions football program, recently proclaimed to four-star defensive tackle recruit Darian Cooper that he would remain in State College for five or six more years. The greatest thing about that statement is that it’s likely very genuine.

Seriously? What's he going to tell these kids? Come to State College even though I'm retiring after next year?

I honestly think he thinks if he retires he will die shortly afterward. Yes, I'm being serious.

Agreed. Coaching gives him a purpose and makes him feel needed. If you take that away from him, he'll just wither away and die.
