Matchup Of Two No. 1s Unlikely It sure looks like a Dallas-New England Super Bowl, doesn't it? The Cowboys are cruising along with an 11-1 record and, with a victory last month over Green Bay, have a two-game lead over the Packers for the top seed in the NFC with four games remaining. The Patriots also are motoring with a 12-0 record and, with a victory last month over Indianapolis, have a three-game lead over the Colts for the top seed in the AFC with four to play. So the roads to the Super Bowl are paved through Dallas and New England. Pencil them in as conference champions and start the hype for a super rematch, right? That's not what history says. The NFL has been seeding the playoff brackets since 1990, when the league expanded its postseason participation from 10 to 12 teams. The last time the top seed in the AFC and NFC advanced to the Super Bowl was 1993. That's right, it has been 14 years since the two top seeds squared off for an NFL championship.
