HECKLERS SEND ROD OFF TO MICHIGAN

Quote:
As former Mountaineers coach Rich Rodriguez bolted Morgantown for Ann Arbor, several folks showed up at the airport to give him a proper sendoff.

Rodriguez was heckled as he boarded a plane for Michigan and his new job.

And the general mood here in West Virginia is "good riddance." Last year, we all felt that Rod's dalliance with the folks at Alabama resulted in a long-term commitment to staying in Morgantown.

We thought that because, well, he said so.

This time around, the general reaction to the news that he had met with Michigan representatives was "here we go again." And most hard-core WVU fans (yours truly included) opted to detach from him emotionally at that instant.

So now we learn again that there really is no loyalty. Even those who have the best reasons to be loyal all too often aren't. Rodriguez was, in the end, no different that Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino or any other coach who says one thing, and does another.

There's also a belief that the unlikely loss to Pitt in the regular-season finale, which robbed the program of a berth in the BCS championship, destroyed Rodriguez's confidence. As we hear it, he feared that the window had closed, and that the best days were behind him.

He also was starting to privately point fingers, we're told, blaming the school for not giving him what he needed to win.

Um, Rich? Did the school tell him to all of a sudden start throwing the ball to the end zone from the Pitt 20 with two minutes to play and down by only six?

They could have won that game. They should have won that game. They would have won that game, if Rodriguez hadn't cracked under like Kramer being interrogated by the cops. Rodriguez apparently realized in the wake of that bitter defeat that he'd never be able to put it behind him, to the point where he decided that he needed a fresh start.

And don't rule out the role of his agent in the process. As we understand it, the agent decided a year ago that it was time for Rod to leave. After Rod opted to stay, it could be that the agent spent the next 12 months pushing buttons and pulling strings, all in the hopes of setting up a phony impasse between the coach and the university.
