Is Derek Anderson The Future For The Browns? I found this article on ESPN.com and it raises some questions about Derek Anderson being the long term answers.
Here are his positives: Quote: |
Anderson doesn't have a lot of starts at this level and he should continue to get better. He has great size and can see over the line of scrimmage and survey the entire field. He has a big enough arm to get the ball anywhere it needs to be and can make all the required throws at this level. He rarely takes sacks, doesn't turn the ball over and gets the ball out on time consistently. This is very rare for a young quarterback and he is obviously a quick study who takes his craft very seriously.
| And his negatives: Quote: |
Anderson is not fleet of foot, will not make many plays with his legs and is an average athlete at best. He doesn't take sacks because he gets rid of the ball so quickly, but it also needs to be noted that he benefits from sitting behind one of the very best pass blocking offensive lines in the league. Next, his accuracy is suspect. He is completing 57.2 percent of his passes and while that isn't terrible by any means, he greatly benefits from throwing to king-sized targets with expansive catching radiuses and sticky hands. Anderson doesn't often put the ball right on the money when comparing him to other top quarterbacks around the league.
| Their recap was: Quote:
At this stage of his career, I think Anderson is the type of quarterback who excels when his surroundings are optimum, but isn't capable of consistently making big plays when his protection breaks down or when his team is overmatched. Obviously this is asking a lot, but the great quarterbacks are able to bail their team out when the conditions are detrimental. This may come in time.
By just reading his pluses and minuses, it sounds like his negatives outweigh his positives. Maybe that is true today, but he is young and remains a work in progress. Also, he is already better than at least half of what the teams in the league are passing off as starting quarterbacks. Many teams would love to have him.
Overall, this is a great problem for the Browns to have. While they do not have a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, they do have two hot commodities at the quarterback position. Personally, I am a believer in Quinn and think that he is going to be the better of the two players in time, but if the Browns trade Anderson and Quinn flops, their decision makers are the ones getting fired. Tis will be a big decision for them, but this is a very good problem for the Browns to have.
| So what do people think? Is Derek Anderson the future in Cleveland? Or is he a mediocre QB who's benefiting from having excellent talent to work with and a system that protects him? |
