Jets Jets To Honor WR Wayne Chrebet Week 3

Chrebet: Sunday's 'My Chance to Say Goodbye'
Source: Rich Cimini, NY Daily News

Quote:
Sunday is Wayne Chrebet Day at the Meadowlands. At halftime, the former wide receiver, who retired after the 2005 season because of too many concussions, will be honored.

On what hes planning to say to the fans: Im just going to take the opportunity to give thanks to all the people that were there for me over the years. Its my chance to say goodbye the way I wanted to, the way I wasnt able to my last game. I wasnt able to absorb the atmosphere, so this is my chance. Its kind of like a second chance for me. Not many people get that, so thats why Im looking forward to it so much.

On any regrets from his playing days: No. I knew that after my ninth year, when they told me I should probably hang it up. They said that I have one more chance to go out there, but if I get another (concussion) , that would be it. I told the people at the time that this is the way that I played. There was nothing I was going to change because I didnt know how to play any other way.

On his physical condition: I do have problems, but I dont think this is the time to talk about them. Some days are good and some days are bad I dont want to be a sob story. People are going to think what theyre going to think. My only thoughts are to look at my life, what I did, what I accomplished, what Im surrounded by. How can I ever complain about anything? It was worth it to me, so Im not going to complain about it."

On his physical limitations: There are some things Im limited to. I get real bad motion sickness now. Sometimes its tough to do something with the kids and spin them around. I cant take them on rollercoasters, fishing and stuff that I used to be able to do. There are a million things that I can do, so Im not concered about it. How can I complain? I have a great life.

Great to see the Jets honor him, but they should I think they should retire his jersey, too. He was a short guy and he wasn't the most talented, but he was tough a nails. I admire the way came into the league, not being drafted and working or ass off just to make it to the roster.

I wonder if Meshawn has congratulated him?

far from a guy you'd retire a number for..but he was a great role player....did his job and never heard him bitch about anything....The Jets are definitely doing the right thing in honoring him...

I have to disagree, man... Was he one of the elite receivers in the NFL? No. But he delivered in every game. He was a fan favorite with Jet fans. In my opinion, retiring a number for a team is not about stats, it's about what he meant for that team.

Yeah..and its not something that should be just given out to any random ol joe even if the guy played his heart out......the Niners would have no numbers left to give if they retired numbers of people like Chrebet...

Yeah, honor the guy but don't retire his number, he didn't do that much to have his jersey retired. You retire numbers of players that are the elite, not good ole boys whom the fans liked.

Exactly. To be more exact, players who had an effect on the league as a whole. Chrebet was good, I liked him, he had heart for days, but he was never an elite player and he never had an effect on the entire league. Not like, say, ROGER CRAIG. (hint, hint)
