Did Titans Vince Young Run His Mouth Too Much? Quote:
Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young may become one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. Then again, perhaps somebody will break him into pieces if he doesn't watch his mouth.
As if defenders don't have enough reason to take his head off already, Young provides trash-talking ammunition. Hell, he throws grenades at his tormentors. He did that on Sunday against the Colts. I knew the second-year pro had some growing up to do, but here's a bit of advice from someone I wouldn't want to trash talk.
"That's how people get hurt," said Colts safety Bob Sanders. "We're after you. You know what I'm saying? I told him, 'If I was you, I'd be quiet.'"
Uh, call me Goofy, but that sounds like sound advice.
"I didn't think that was smart on his part," Sanders said. "He was running around talking and clapping and chanting. I'm like, 'Look, we're hitting you. Are you serious? You're going to start acting like that?'"
Early in Sunday's game, Young got crunched and stayed down. After catching his breath with trainers, he bounced up - kind of what I would imagine Jon Kitna's "miracle" was like in Detroit - and yelled at the Colts' sideline. Not just a few players, but Young yelled at the entire sideline, complete with a few hand gestures.
The next thing you know, he's jawing with Colts cornerback Tim Jennings. Heads are snapping. Jennings told me it was nothing personal, but no doubt some mind games going on there. Young's smack was getting the Colts excited.
Then came the sideline run-in with Colts cornerback Kelvin Hayden, who gave Young a little extra shove. Young took offense and flipped the football at Hayden. An official saw the reaction. That's 15 yards. Young also took off his helmet. Official missed that. Should have been another 15. As much as Titans fans will say Hayden should have been penalized, too - I don't disagree - Young just hasn't figured out the NFL just yet. Keep your head! You're a quarterback, for crying out loud!
I'm told that after the game, Young put on another display, throwing his helmet, ripping off his uniform and pads. I know from being down there he was a baby in the news conference. Short answers. Defensive. Just can't handle the heat, I guess. At least it wasn't as bad as last year here at the RCA Dome, when I learned after the loss he took a football cleat and stuck it into a locker room wall.
So mark Dec. 30th on your calendars, Colts fans. Maybe it will mean something in the standings when Tennessee returns to the RCA Dome. Or maybe not. But if Young is playing, class reconvenes in the NFL's school of hard knocks.
