NFL 30 To Watch: Michael Griffin, Cornerback, Tennessee Titans Quote:
Pacman Jones' strip-club addiction pretty much molded the Titans' draft strategy. Jones, who predilection for "makin' it rain" contributed to his 16-game suspension, not only left Tennessee without one of the game's best punt returners, but also created a gaping hole in the secondary.
As a consequence, the Titans used their first-round pick on defensive back Michael Griffin. Griffin was a strong safety at the University of Texas and many NFL scouts thought he was the best safety prospect in the draft. The Titans are set at the position -- Chris Hope, signed last off-season, had a great year -- but the club thought enough of Griffin's athleticism that they drafted him to play cornerback.
Bottom line: Making the transition from college to the NFL is usually overwhelming, and it's especially tough on defensive backs. Even if Griffin isn't ready to start the season, Tennessee has contingencies in Kelly Herndon, Reynaldo Hill and Cortland Finnegan.
None of these players have Jones' game-changing abilities, but all are eligible to play this year, which is kind important.
