| | | University of Miami quarterback Jacory Harris met the media Friday, after being named the new starter by coach Al Golden for the nationally televised Ohio State game Sept. 17. But before he expounded on the strengths of Ohio State and how the Hurricanes must rebound after their opening-night loss at Maryland, Harris was contrite about his part in accepting impermissible benefits from former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro — although he never mentioned Shapiro by name. Quote:
“First of all, I’ve got to make sure I apologize to the University, president [Donna] Shalala — starting with her first — for everything that happened, everything she had to go through during this time,” said Harris, one of eight players suspended by the NCAA for their dealings with Shapiro, now serving a 20-year prison term for perpetrating a $930 million Ponzi scheme.
“And then [to] the fans, I want to apologize for something that happened our freshman year. We were all young, but still there’s no excuse for what happened. “And then apologize to the team for everything that’s been going down and putting them through things they had to go through during this hard time. I just wanted to make sure I apologized to everyone.”
