UNC moved quickly in naming Withers. Chancellor Holden Thorp and athletic director Dick Baddour held a joint press conference Thursday morning to address the dismissal of Davis. Baddour also announced he plans to step down, allowing a new athletic director to conduct and hire a permanent coach to replace Davis. “The Chancellor and I spoke with (Withers) this afternoon and we believe he has the leadership qualities to help our student-athletes deal with the challenges ahead,” Baddour said in a statement released by the school Thursday night. “We are fortunate to have someone with his credentials and background. He is ready for this position.” Withers guided the UNC defense to a No. 4 ranking in the ACC and 30th nationally in 2010, despite the challenges of personnel losses due to NCAA sanctions and injuries.
