UNC AD Dick Baddour Stepping Down

Dick Baddour will step down as athletic director at North Carolina, the announcement coming a day after the school fired football coach Butch Davis amid an NCAA investigation into the program. Baddour said Thursday that he had asked university chancellor Holden Thorp to begin a search for a new AD, so that person could be in charge of hiring Davis' replacement. "It was pretty evident to me as the decision unfolded that that's in the best interest of the football program," Baddour said at Thursday's news conference. "That's a realization that if you're in this business, your head football coach needs to know who the athletic director is going to be. With me knowing this is going to be my final year, you want the field to be as best as possible and the way to do that is to do what I'm doing." Baddour's contract is up in June 2012.
